It was launched in Italy in 1972, but it was not until 1976 that the first right hand drive versions arrived here in the UK.
The mid-engine design was influenced by racing cars of the day, reaching an estimated 170,000 world wide sales.
Our current X1/9 is affectionately know as "Clementine" (please don't ask!) or "Clemy" for short. It had been kept in dry storage for over 6 years by a Jaguar enthusiast who had promised his wife to convert it to an automatic. Thankfully for us he never did and his wife benefited by getting a new car.
In 2005 it underwent a mechanical restoration which included rebuilding the seized engine and a complete replacement of the braking system.
Having both a factory lined and lightweight removable roof for summer and winter months makes it a great all year round car and with its great go kart like handling it is often referred to as the baby Ferrari.
